'You’re really my friend? Then I’m gonna hold the light until the end. Until the very end.' - Kevin Wendell Crumb to Casey Cooke
Kevin Wendell Crumb, also known as The Horde, is one of the main antagonists of the Eastrail 177 film trilogy. He suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), and as a result, developed 24 personalities. While most of the personalities were fine and good-willed, he had a few that were antagonistic in their behavior.
Two of these personalities form The Horde, consisting of Dennis and Patricia, who believed in 'The Beast' - a culmination of all the different personalities inside Kevin's head and the animals at the zoo Kevin worked at. The Beast was the 24th personality in Kevin's mind, and was found to be a cannibal with superhuman abilities.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Kevin Wendell Crumb was born to Clarence Wendell Crumb and Penelope Crumb. At some point in his childhood, Clarence boarded the Eastrail 177 train bound for Philadelphia, which was destroyed in a derailment orchestrated by domestic terrorist Elijah Price. Clarence was one of the many casualties of the crash, in which only David Dunn, who was on the same train after a job interview, survived unscathed.
After Clarence's death, life got harder for Kevin as he was left to live with his compulsive mother, who abused him since the age of three, leading to Kevin creating multiple different personalities as a defense mechanism, culminating in the creation of 23 total personalities, which constantly kept Kevin's original identity dormant deep within his mind.
When Kevin reached adulthood, he got a job at the Philadelphia Zoo, eventually being promoted to head of maintenance. One day, two girls approached him and played a prank on him, taking his hands and putting them under the girls' shirts, before they ran away giggling. It was this act that may have led to Dennis' sexual appetite. He also came into contact with Karen Fletcher, a psychiatrist who specialized in helping DID-afflicted people, to which several of Kevin's personalities formed a bond with.
Events in Split[]
Kevin as "Dennis" knocked out Mr. Benoit and kidnapped three teenage girls, Casey Cooke, Claire Benoit, and Marcia, knocking them out with chloroform before taking them in an underground bunker of the Philadelphia Zoo, intending to use them as food for "The Beast".
Events in Glass[]
Three weeks later, The Horde kidnapped four teenage cheerleaders and kept them hostage to be fed to "The Beast". While returning to the hideout, The Horde bumped into David, who received a vision of The Horde's recent kidnapping. He then appears and saves the girls. The Beast shows up and they start a fight. The conflict ends when they are surrounded by police in the company of Ellie Staple. Then they are taken to the same mental hospital where Elijah was hospitalized.
Powers and Abilities[]
These powers and abilities are ones demonstrated by Kevin when the Beast emerges in the light:
- Superhuman Strength: The Beast demonstrates an abnormal amount of strength when he manages to pull apart and bend the two metal bars of a cage. This strength is also shown in Dr. Fletcher's death. His strength is once again shown and further explored when facing David Dunn, showing that both forces are similar, making David suffer from his "Bear Hug" attack. He can throw people away like they're rag dolls and managed to bring down a car with two police officers inside. He was also able to run holding David Dunn above his head and throw him with ease.
- Enhanced Speed: The Beast seems to also possess a enhanced level of speed as he manages to not only avoid most of the bullets shot by Casey, he also manages to race down the hall and to the cage within a short amount of time. His speed was shown to be superior to David's, probably because of his advanced age.
- Enhanced leap: The Beast is able to leap/jump great distances and heights due to the strength in his legs.
- Superhuman Durability: His high level of durability is shown by the way of a knife, held by Dr. Fletcher, made contact with his skin but broke off easily. However, this ability is not as good compared to David Dunn's, as the Beast appeared to still be injured (even if only slightly) after being hit with a direct shot from the shotgun.
- Superhuman Stamina: An increased amount of stamina also seems to have developed alongside the Beast and his other abilities/powers, evidence by the above-mentioned abilities/powers. This abnormal resistance was also demonstrated when David hit him several times in a van, partially crushing it and he gets up without apparent fatigue, still easily beating four policemen.
- Wall-Crawling: Using only the slightest grip, the Beast can climb onto walls and other surfaces. In Glass, it has been shown that your ability to climb walls has been increased, and he was able to stand on all fours and with his body turned on his side while walking without losing his balance.
- Pain Suppression: Despite being shot repeatedly by a shotgun held by Casey, the Beast was able to move about and carry on regardless. He seemed capable of ignoring the bullets and any pain that may have followed. And after several damage of being attacked by David and police officers, he did not appear tired or with apparent bruising.
- Animal Vocalization: The Beast showed the ability to easily reproduce intimidating sounds and roars from predatory animals, using this as a scare tactic, as it is shown him hitting his chest like a gorilla to show his strength and superiority.
Weaknesses[]
- Name: By stating the original personality's name - 'Kevin Wendell Crumb' -, he will revert back to the original, Kevin. This action reminds him of his abusive mother and her angry usage of his full name.

- It's confirmed by M. Night Shyamalan that you can see a young Kevin in Unbreakable. When David Dunn starts testing out his extrasensory perception, he bumps into a woman harshly dragging her son along with her. The contact he has with the mother causes him to hear the screams of a child, alerting Dunn to the abuse suffered by the son at the hands of his mother.
